- plan 2-3 educational activities & supporting documentation for a single social media tool
- Create content for student & parental training to address 1 social media tool use & management of risks compatible with requirements of a BC public institution.
- Analyze social media tools for educational uses compatible with requirements of a BC public institution.
- Share integrated resources with others
Reflection to support evidence:
My first evidence of learning is the social media package I designed for the application Seesaw. The package contained
1) A quick scan sheet of general information called, About my social media tool," 2) a consent form, demonstrating my knowledge of FIPPA and “good” practice, 3) a backgrounder page , introducing the tool of use with an educational rationale and how it works. This includes what personal information is required from the student and where that information will be stored. The document was required to be BC FIPPA compliant. For an elective option, I chose to create lessons for introduction and activities in the class,
Through this exercise I successfully learned to build a framework to scaffold the developmentally appropriate use of a social media tool. I was able to understand and apply what preparations were required in terms of planning and documentation to use a Seesaw with students and parents. Once I completed the social media package, I felt confident to begin using and discussing the policy and guidelines with parents, teachers and administrators. I plan on sharing this document with other teachers and supporting them to create their own social media packages.
As a teacher, it is imperative I understand and fully comply with BC FIPPA guidelines if I want to use technology in my classroom. The experience of increasing my knowledge and skills to create a social media package has provided me insight into how little most of our district understands what it means to become FIPPA compliant. I am hoping to provide a guiding voice to our district, or at the least, educate those working around me.

Evidence and Reflection Learning #2:
Achievement of Learning Video
OLTD Learning Outcomes Addressed:
Achievement of Learning Video
OLTD Learning Outcomes Addressed:
- Develop knowledge of key social media terms and concepts
- develop understandings of: functional contexts & constraints, employment considerations, privacy tensions, BC legal, school policies/procedure, professional ethics re: social media use in education
- Analyze the BC context for social media use in education
- Evaluate advantages and disadvantages for teaching, learning and professional activities
Reflection to support evidence:
My second piece of evidence is my final reflection video. For this assignment we were required to create an achievement of learning piece addressing the following topics of Digital Professionalism, Privacy, Social Justice and Safety Boundaries. To each I identified my past, present and future thoughts in terms of my knowledge regarding social media, my skills & training, practice & experience, awareness of guidelines & policy, and confidence, attitudes & perception. I also rated myself on each using Hengstler' s 5 Pillars of Compliance (2014). They include Avoidance, Ignorance, Knowledge Non-Compliance, Approaching, Establishing and Full-Compliance.
Creating this video helped me reflect on each of the 4 topics we covered in the course and highlight my growth and development. Looking back I can see that I began my journey on Hengstler's Avoidance and Ignorance continuum.
As I worked through each topic with readings and assignments, my knowledge of social media terms and concepts grew. We had the opportunity to apply our knowledge and understandings to real-life situations which increased my confidence and then my compliance on the continuum. I am now in Approaching on the continuum working towards Establishing. My goal is to be working in Full-Compliance and modelling and educating other teachers.
Through this course, I concluded it is incumbent upon me as an educator to role model and teach how to use social media in a safe and responsible manner by providing an education including digital professionalism and e-Safety. Our awareness of technology use in the classroom should include understanding and complying with the requirements of BC FIPPA regulations and discuss the repercussions and intentions of private vs public content. We need to teach technology skills and provide time for practice and mastery, to be conscious and accommodating of the digital divide that will exist in schools, and to be respectful of cultural inclusion. Lastly, we need to be educated on possible risks of social media, understanding the teacher’s role and responsibilities being prepared with an effective e-safety plan to help protect students, teachers and families.
